Eden's Moon stamped herself as one of the favorites for the $1,000,000 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) when she turned back a bid from favored Reneesgotzip to win the $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) but several lengths.
Ridden to victory by Martin Garcia, Eden's Moon got off to an excellent beginning and went straight to the lead while rattling off good fractions of :23.16 and :46.47. Reneesgotzip also got off to a quick start, but blew the first turn and drifted out about six paths. She quickly recovered and settled into the second position, but the incident certainly hurt her chances.
Rounding the far turn, Reneesgotzip moved up to challenge Eden's Moon for the lead, while Made to Love Her and Willa B Awesome loomed right behind them. However, the two front-runners soon separated themselves from the rest of the field, drawing away following three-quarters of a mile in 1:10.44. There was some slight bumping in the stretch, caused by Reneesgotzip drifting inward, but it didn't affect Eden's Moon, who drew off powerfully to win the race by three or four lengths
Reneesgotzip held second over longshot Open Water, while Willa B Awesome rounded out the superfecta. The final time was 1:35.27.
The winner is owned by Kaleem Shah and is trained by Bob Baffert.
