Daddy Nose Best surged from off the pace to catch Isn't He Clever in deep stretch and win the $800,000 Sunland Derby (gr. III) by three-quarters of a length.
Ridden to victory by Julien Leparoux, Daddy Nose Best settled into mid-pack early on as Castaway and Ender Knievel hooked up in a duel for the lead that carried them well clear of the rest of the field while setting a challenging pace of :22.48 and :46.24. Isn't He Clever was rating in the third position, followed by No Spin and Stirred Up. Tequila Factor and Justanoldsong were the early trailers.
Castaway and Ender Knievel continued to show the way into the far turn, running three-quarters of a mile in 1:10.83, but the rest of the field was beginning to catch up. First to challenge them was Isn't He Perfect, who surged boldly on the far outside to take over the lead. Entering the homestretch, the colt held a commanding lead and appeared to be on his way to victory.
However, Daddy Nose Best was beginning to get into gear on the far outside. Isn't He Clever was clearly beginning to tire, allowing Daddy Nose Best to challenge for the lead in deep stretch. The two colts briefly locked together in a duel for command, with Daddy Nose Best emerging the winner in the final strides. The final time was 1:48.59.
Stirred Up finished third, while No Spin completed the superfecta. Castaway and Ender Knievel both tired badly entering the homestretch and both were beaten by large margins.
